Presented as written by Nikki Maharaj, journalist at Highvelder:
Ms Johanna Leshabane had a vision of opening her own recycling center and in 2007 made it a reality.
It’s called Bophelo Recycling and the journey began in May.
Ms Leshabane said: “When I was younger, I always dreamed of being a model or a teacher.
“I never had opening my own recycling center in mind.”
Ms Leshabane said she was not able to go to college, because she fell pregnant in her final year of school and could not afford it financially.
She worked in retail for Edcon in Alberton in 2000.
She, however, had the vision of working hand-in-hand with street kids picking up rubbish on the streets.
At that point, she did not know what recycling was, so she did more research and registered her company in Pretoria.
She did not have any machinery and the company did not grow as she wanted it to, but, she still collected recyclables.
“I picked up and collected recyclables and stored it at the back of my flat at the time.
“I remember my landlord telling me to get rid of the rubbish as it looked dirty.”
