Heifers were struck by lightning during a storm resulting in 23 dead.
|Lightning caused major damage during the early morning hours of Wednesday, 2 November, when a lightning storm swooped through the farm, Goedehoop, approximately 8 km from Vaalwater.|
The lightning struck a heard of beef master heifers resulting in 23 dead, five of which were pregnant.
Two heifers managed to survive the ordeal, and seem to be doing fine.
“This was a very unfortunate event for us, as the heifers who were struck seemed to be walking together,” said Dian Senekal, farm manager.
Fortunately the herd of 81 heifers were split up during the storm, or it could have resulted in a much larger loss.
