Lekwa-Teemane municipal mayor Moeder Makodi has been given the boot after unrest in Bloemhof, North West, following the death of three babies as a result of a water contamination crisis in the area.

The water crisis hit Bloemhof in the last week of May, sparking fears of a cholera outbreak in the area as a number of patients suffered diarrhoea.

According to Eyewitness News, North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo on Sunday told residents at a special meeting in Boitumelong that the African National Congress (ANC) had decided to remove Makodi in a bid to bring about stability in the area.

North West MEC Collen Maine on Tuesday blamed municipal manager Andrew Makuapane for the diarrhoea outbreak that resulted in over 300 people being admitted to hospital.

It is suspected that Makuapane failed to follow-up on maintenance done to the area’s sewage pipes after a contractor left the site he was working on during a service delivery protest in April. As a result, the sewage pipes were left in a dilapidated state.

However, it is unclear where the leakages are. A forensic investigation is currently underway.
